Cannes Palme D’or winner to open Era New Horizons IFF – the biggest film festival in Poland

    THE WHITE RIBBON by Michael Haneke will be making its Polish Premiere as the Opening Film of ERA NEW HORIZONS INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL, to be held in the city of Wroclaw, Poland, from 23 July to 2 August.

    The Opening Night Gala will also showcase the new Thai film NYMPH, the latest masterwork from Pen-ek Ratanaruang, screened to great acclaim at this year's Un Certain Regard section of the Cannes Film Festival.

    Festival will present over 500 films from 45 countries, including 250 feature titles. Most will be Eastern European or Polish premieres, bringing over 600 screenings to festival audiences and visiting industry guests.

    Guy Maddin, Tsai Ming-Liang, Jennifer Reeves, Jan Troell, Krzysztof Zanussi and Piotr Dumala will attend the retrospectives of their work

    Over 11 days, the Festival will host 350 international guests, including world famous directors Mike Figgis, Peter Greenaway, Agnès Varda and Wim Wenders, producers, writers and film critics.

    NEW HORIZONS International Competition will showcase fourteen director's driven titles which will compete for the Grand Prix (20 000 €) - the festival's highest honour awarded by the international jury. This year‘s selection is particularly strong on European and Asian titles. Among the there are: Face, by Tsai Ming-Liang, Steve McQueen's Hunger, Iréne by Alain Cavalier, A Lake by Philippe Grandrieux, Burrowing by Henrik Hellström and Fredrik Wenzel, or Ishibashi Kiyomi's Spyder .

    João Botelho (The Northern Land) will chair the NEW HORIZONS International Jury, which also includes Chilean and British directors Sebastian Lelio (The Sacred Family), Peter Strickland (Katalin Varga) as well as Polish directors: Lukasz Barczyk (Unmoved Mover) and Leszek Wosiewicz (Kornblumenblau).

    FILMS ON ART International Competition, premiering at the ENH 2009, consists of 14 feature-length documentaries that will be judged by the international jury, which will award the Best Film Prize (10 000 €). The selected films include: Agnès Varda's The Beaches of Agnès, Johan Grimonprez's Double Take, FLicKeR, by Nik Sheehan and Peter Greenaway's Rembrandt's J'Accuse... !.

    In the jury will sit: Polish visual artist Katarzyna Kozyra, French filmmaker Marie Losier, Hungarian director Tibor Szemzö and film critic Jay Weissberg (Variety).

    NEW POLISH FILMS Competition will showcase 13 titles including some World Premieres: Rebound directed by Kinga Debska and The Forest by Piotr Dumala.

    The international jury headed by Marta Mészáros, will award the Wroclaw Film Prize, (approx. 25 000 €), and the Best New Director Prize (approx. 10 000 €). In the jury will also sit: director Pawel Pawlikowski (My Summer of Love), director of Belgrade FF Miroljub Vuckovic, Emily Atef (Stranger in Me) and film critic Michael Brooke (BFI, Sight & Sound).

    All competitions' winning titles are guaranteed distribution in Poland.

    Apart from the competitions this year's program focuses on contemporary Swedish and Canadian cinema and classical Hungarian films.

    Polish - Swedish Co-Production Forum (July 26th-28th) will present 8 film projects in a series of one-to-one meetings.
