Polish Senate amends media law

By

The Polish Senate has been voting on amendments to the act that governs the National Broadcasting Council. The chamber approved an amendment that allows the Minister of the Treasury to dismiss a member of the board of state-run radio or television for cause.

The amendment permits dismissal in cases where the board member is unable to perform his or her duties or if an independent inspection determines the person is acting to the detriment of the company.

The Senate will also consider amendments by the ruling Civic Platform calling for the National Broadcasting Council to be increased from five to seven members and that it should be stripped of some powers such as granting licenses.

The Council was criticised during the previous administration as being too politically oriented and the new government vowed to curb its influence.
