Sony Picks up In Darkness

By Katarzyna Grynienko

Agnieszka Holland's newest film In Darkness has been acquired by Sony Pictures Classics for U.S. distribution. The moving WWII drama is a co-production between Poland's Studio Filmowe ZEBRA (www.zebrafilm.pl), Canada's The Film Works Ltd. and Germany's Schmidtz Katze Filmkollektiv (www.schmidtzkatze.eu).

The film about a Polish criminal risking his life to hide Jewish refugees from the Nazis began production in September 2010, completing production in January 2011. The budget of over 22 million PLN ( EUR 5.6 million) received 3.6 million PLN in financing from the Polish Film Institute (www.pisf.pl).

"With In Darkness Agnieszka Holland has made her masterwork and is truly at the peak of her form and maturity. This new true story of WWII and the Holocaust is a revelation. It is a privilege and pleasure to be together again with our friends Agnieszka, Dirk Schuerhoff and Beta Cinema," Sony Pictures Classics (www.sonyclassics.com) said in a statement.
