The Mill and The Cross Breaks Genre Boundaries

By Katarzyna Grynienko

WARSAW: The Mill And The Cross, director Lech Majewski's artistic drama about Peter Breugel's painting Christ Carrying A Cross, is breaking records for a non-mainstream movie in Poland. Since its premiere on 18 March 2011, the film has garnered over 12,600 viewers.

The film has been praised as one of Majewski's most impressive works, especially for the original approach to the crucification theme as well as its refined aesthetics.

The Polish/Swedish coproductions was one of the biggest films made in Poland in 2009, and included not only a detailed reconstructed historic set and costumes but also multilevel film shots and the use of 3D techniques. The shoot took place in several locations in Silesia starting 21 November 2008.

The movie was produced by Angelus Silesius Society, a company co-funded by Majewski, with a budget of PLN 4.2 million (€1.1 million). The main funding came from Polish TV (www.tvp.pl) and the Polish Film Institute (www.pisf.pl), which granted it €390,000 for production. The co-producers of the film are Film Institution "Silesia Film", Arkana Studio (www.arkanastudio.pl), Supra Film (www.suprafilm.com), Odeon (www.odeon.com.pl), 24 Media (www.24media.pl), Swedish company Bokomotiv (www.bokomotiv.se), and Piramida (www.piramidafilm.pl).

The regular distribution of 18 copies in March 2011 was preceded by an international campaign consisting of international premieres at the Sundance Film Festival (23 January 2011), Louvre Museum (2 February 2011), Rotterdam IFF (30 January 2011), and Goteborg IFF (3 February 2011). In Poland, special premiere screenings of the film were held in Warsaw (14 March 2011) and Cracow (15 March 2011). The positive reception at international events has assured distribution abroad by the end of 2011. The international sales agent of the title is Wide Management (www.widemanagement.com). The Polish distributor ITI Cinema (www.iticinema.com.pl) is also planning a DVD release in the second half of 2011.
