In the Perspectives Competition Georgian director Eduard Oganesyan's Georgian comedy will be screened.
The festival kicked off last night with its opening ceremony at the October Cinema where Tim Burton received a lifetime achievement award. Russian director Timur Bekmambetov was also honoured at the ceremony. Bekmambetov moved on to Hollywood after the international success of his Night Watch and has teamed up with Burton on a number of projects. MIFF has lost two of its traditional homes this year with the massive Pushkin Cinema where the opening and closing are usually held under reconstruction and the opening party transferred to an outdoor venue near Luzhniki Stadium instead of its usual home in Gorky Park on the Moscow River.
In total the festival will screen hundreds of films from 21-29 June in four competitions and 22 side programmes at venues across Moscow. Two business events will take place, the Roskino Doors (21-24 June) event with a film market of 20 films and an industry summit of professionals and the Moscow Business Square (25-27 June) hosted by the Russian Cinema Fund which this year includes the Eurasia Film Meetings an International Film Forum of CIS, Baltic countries and the Republic of Georgia.
A total of 150 Russian films will screen during MIFF and as usual all foreign guests will have their eyes on the Russian film programme headed by Irina Pavlova. New this year is a short film programme headed by one of MIFF's youngest team members Nelya Golman.
