The strong uptake from film and TV productions in just four months reflects the strong growth in the Russian audiovisual production sector. Glavkino announced in June that it was open for business and ready to take on its central European neighbours with cost-cutting deals that make shooting in Russia competitive.
While most of the new business coming through the Glavkino studios’ doors and filling its 12 new sound stages is Russian CEO Ilya Bachurin says he is also in talks with several international productions. While Bachurin says that a certain amount of the bookings might be seasonal with production of Christmas specials for Russian channels even taking this into consideration he is expecting not less than 70% bookings going into January. This is from a starting point in June of only about 30% less than four months ago.
Glavkino has said it is still ready to offer deals that are 10% less than some of its central European competitors but as the studios pavilions become increasingly full there will be less chance to take advantage of Glavkino’s competitive offers on services and facilities.
One of the hottest new productions currently at Glavkino is Natalia’s Bondarchuk’s Mystery of the Snow Queen a 5-7m USD children’s film being shot in 3D in Glavkino’s pavilions. As Glavkino boasts the latest in 3D equipment in Europe it’s not surprising that Bondarchuk has chosen Glavkino as the place to shoot her film.
Natalia Bondarchuk was in Kittilä, Finnish Lapland to shoot in 3D with her team of 82 crew & cast from Russia, Austria, Germany, the US and Finland earlier this year. The film is due for delivery in 2013.
Glavkino’s main client in the TV world is Russian TV Channel but there is a lot of work coming in from CTC, TNT, MTV, TV3 and other smaller channels as well as several ads that were shot in 3D.
Glavkino it the first major new film production facility in Russia that is all digital. The 100m USD studio which opened earlier this year with facilities that offer that very latest in digital technology from shooting, lighting, all phases of post-production. Digital equipment from suppliers such as Grass Valley and Sony as well as world-class CGI from an experienced team make the studio one of the most technically advanced in Europe. The studios are fully equipped for 3D production from shooting to the final cut.
Glavkino has space for the production of about 100 TV programmes for Russian channels and about 20 feature films a year. The studios boast 12 new sound stages and comfortable new office space for production companies.
The facilities include the latest in audio postproduction video production facilities and full 3D Tract, automated lighting and engineering systems. In February of 2012 the first phase of the project was opened with a territory of 22 000 m ². After a second 150m USD phase of development that is in the pipeline the total area of the studios will be 33 000 m ² making it the largest in Russia.
