Androulla Vassiliou, the European Commissioner responsible for Culture will, on this occasion, meet with artists and professionals to launch a new phase of MEDIA, the European support programme for the development and distribution of audiovisual works.
On Monday the 20 of May, Androulla Vassiliou will open an international conference organised by the C.N.C (Centre National du Cinéma et de l’Image Animée) on the theme of the cultural exception in the Europe of tomorrow. Commissioner Vassiliou will then meet with leading figures from the world of cinema, music, theatre and literature to discuss new ways in which the different artistic disciplines could work together. Shirin Neshat, Wim Wandekeybus and Teho Teardo will notably be present at the meeting.
2014 will mark the beginning of a new era for the MEDIA programme. It will form part of the Creative Europe programme which will distribute grants for the development of films, training and distribution. It will also create a new loan guarantee fund to facilitate access to finance in the cultural and creative sectors.
The Creative Europe programme is expected to have a global budget of around 1,3 billion euros for the period 2014-2020, which represents an increase of 9 % more than the existing MEDIA and Culture programmes.
13 films supported by MEDIA are present this year in the different selections, of which 7 are in competition for the Palme d’Or.
