Netflix Expansion Fuels Fears of Reduced Diversity for European Audiences

By

WARSAW: Netflix announced its launch in more than 130 new countries including Central and Eastern Europe at the beginning of 2016 making the internet TV provider now available in more than 190 countries globally.

The service which now can be accessed via internet streaming by paying a monthly fee is mainly available only in English and has yet to provide programming in local language groups throughout Europe.

Netflix’s rollout across Europe has been controversial as European filmmakers fear the online giant’s entry into the European market may reduce cultural diversity and the ability of filmmakers from the smaller countries of the EU to compete for audiences in their home countries.
