FNE at Cannes IFF 2011: Cannes Film Festival Winners

    CANNES: A jury headed by Robert De Niro awarded the Palm d'Or to Terrence Malick's The Tree of Life. The Grand Prix was shared by The Kid with a Bike directed by the Dardennes and Once Upon a Time in Anatolia directed by Turkish director Nuri Bilge Ceylan and produced by Zeynep Ozbatur Atakan. Kirsten Dunst won the Best Actress award for her role in Lars von Trier's Melancholia. Von Trier provoked a storm of controversy during the festival with his remarks about Nazism during a press conference.

    In the Certain Regard competition a jury headed by Emir Kusturica awarded the top prize ex-aqueo to Kim Ki-Duk's Arirang and Andreas Dresen's Stopped on Track. The Special Jury Prize was awarded to Russian director Andrey Zvyaginstev's Elena while Mohammad Rasoulof who was prevented from attending the festival by Iranian authorities won the directing prize for Goodbye. A moving moment came when Rasoulof's wife read out a message from her husband as she accepted the award on his behalf.
