"We came to this name because we evolved and we are a big family now," Giuliano Doman told FNE.
The company now has 61 permanent employers and is one of the biggest Romanian film companies after Castel Film (www.castelfilm.ro) and MediaPro Pictures (www.mediapropictures.com). Family Film produces advertisements, feature and documentary films, animation and 3D graphics.
"Apart from developing the film, we do everything in house. We have three sets in Bucharest (which is a big plus), set designers, camera equipment, lighting, grip, power generators and a great video and audio post-production department," Doman said. "Our most important achievement so far is that we managed to get all the best people in all our departments. We produced avertisements awarded at Cannes, Golden Drum, Ad'or, Effie, et cetera," he added.
Family Film is now producing the third season of the Romanian series Narcisa sălbatică/The Wild Narcissus and is in preparation with Bodgan Dumitrescu Dreyer's So I Say/Condamnat la viaţă, a feature starring Gérard Depardieu, Harvey Keitel and Laura Morante, an international co-production produced by Family Film and set to shooting in autumn.
Hence, the main goal for Family Film in the next year is to attract international productions to Romania, and to work with them as a production services partner or co-producer.
Questioned on the most important challenge a Romanian producer has to overcome, Doman replied, "Surviving, no matter if one is producing advertisements or films. We are always supporting advertisement production and most of the time we recover the expenses in 75-100 days time. As for movies, the legislation doesn't help you in attracting investors. There are no incentives, and we count on the grants from the National Centre for Cinema (www.cncinema.abt.ro), on less and less money from the advertising agencies, and on co-productions."
