Of the 25 feature films financed in 2013 18 were supported by the Romanian Film Center. In 2013 16 nationally-financed feature films were produced, of which 11 were supported by the CNC and five were independent features. In 2012 four features were supported by the CNC and five independent features were produced. In 2013 seven majority international coproductions were supported by the CNC and two minority international coproductions were made without the support of the CNC.
The percent of Romanian films distributed in the domestic cinema rose from 13% in 2012 to 16% in 2013, while the percent of the European films slightly decreased from 30.05% to 28.9%. The number of Romanian premieres rose from 23 in 2012 to 27 in 2013, while the number of European premieres decreased from 48 to 38. That continues a falling trend, as there were 57 European premieres in 2009 and 2010.
Admissions grew from 8,348,538 in 2012 to 9,048,257 in 2013 following a positive trend that started a few years earlier. Admissions were 5,279,932 in 2009. The gross box office also increased and it almost doubled in 2013 (36,441,800 EUR/160,523,144 RON) compared to 2009 (19,737,200 EUR/86,940,607 RON). Gross box office was 32,870,900 EUR/144,793,811 RON in 2012. Admissions per capita grew from 0.43 in 2012 to 0.46 in 2013, compared to only 0.24 in 2009.
Cinema City Romania (http://www.cinemacity.ro/) secured its place as the leading exhibition company with 15 active cinemas, 142 screens, 5,132,592 admissions and 21,773,300 EUR/95,909,651 RON gross box office in 2013, followed by Băneasa Developments (http://www.baneasashoppingcity.ro/en/contact) with just one cinema, 13 screens, 791,651 admissions and 3,956,420 EUR/17,427,721 RON gross box office, and Hollywood Multiplex Operations (http://www.hmultiplex.ro/) with two active cinemas, 11 screens, 752,561 admissions and 3,483,850 EUR/15,346,064 RON gross box office. RADEF RomaniaFilm (http://www.romaniafilm.ro/), the former communist network, is on the fifth position with 30 active cinemas, 30 screens, 417,406 admissions and 767,697 EUR/3,381,645 RON gross box office. RADEF closed five cinemas from 2012 to 2013.
There were 76 active cinemas in 2013, with 264 screens. The average ticket price was 4.02 EUR/17.74 RON. MediaPro Distribution (http://www.mediaprodistribution.ro/en/) continued to be the leading distributor covering 30% of the market, followed by Ro Image 2000 (20.05%) and Forum Film Romania (http://www.cineforum.ro/) (18.2%). The number of active cinemas was 81 in 2012.
The Top 3 of the most successful films in terms of admissions in 2013 includes Hobbit : The Desolation of Smaug, Fast &Furious 6 and Thor 2, while the three most successful European films were Mortal Instruments : City of Bones, Justin and the Knights of Valour and Les Misérables. Călin Peter Netzer’s Child’s Pose/Poziţia copilului (produced and distributed by Parada Film, paradafilm.ro), Iulia Rugină’s debut feature Love Building (produced by actoriedefilm.ro, distributed by MediaPro Distribution) and Alexandru Maftei’s Miss Christina/Domnişoara Christina (produced and distributed by Abis Studio, http://www.abisstudio.ro/) sold most of the tickets among the domestic releases (111,466, 26,443 and 21,372).
The total income of the cinema fund grew 1 m RON from 2012 to 2013, to 9.1 m EUR/40 m RON.
