BUCHAREST: More than 80 films will screen in the 20th edition of the European Film Festival organised by the Romanian Cultural Institute and taking place in six Romanian cities from 5 to 29 May 2016.

The European Film Festival is a traditional film festival in Romania which started first in Bucharest and spread to other cities. This year the festival takes place in six towns, with four of them (Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Baia Mare and Timisoara) competing to represent Romania as the European Cultural Capital in 2021. The other two towns are Targu Mures and Hunedoara.

The selection of the films was coordinated by the organiser, the Romanian Cultural Institute, together with the EU embassies and the local distributors Independența Film and Transilvania Film. Since 2014 the festival has been under the patronage of EUNIC Bucharest.

Aside from the most representatives, recent films from the EU countries, this year’s festival sections include Shakespeare 400, Ten EFF Friends (films made by the previous ambassadors of the festival, who are famous Romanian directors), Lux Prize with the finalists of the Lux Prize 2015 (Mediterranea by Jonas Carpignano, Mustang by Deniz Gamze Ergüven and The Lesson/Urok by Kristina Grozeva and Petar Valchanov produced by Abraxas Film) and Escape in Europe, produced with the support of One World Romania Festival and the European Parliament Office in Romania.

The Audience Award will be announced at the end of the festival. Among the foreign guests of the festival is the Danish actor Lars Ranthe who plays in The Commune by Thomas Vinterberg.
