The producer attended the 6th Boat Meeting pitching forum at the 44th Molodist IFF in Kiev, which concluded on 31 October, 2014, seeking Central and East European coproducers for the 1.3m EUR film. Molodist IFF also hosted a major retrospective of Slovak films during the festival.
“To present Schengen Story at Boat Meeting in Kiev was definitely an inspiring experience. We have gotten very positive feedback both from Ukrainian and other foreign participants, though it´s too soon to evaluate the real impact of the forum. The upcoming months will show whether the negotiations got off in the right direction and will end up with the signing of a coproduction agreement,” Hrycová told FNE.
The story of the film takes place on the border of the Schengen area between Ukraine and Eastern Slovakia, where a lot of smuggling and other illegal border crossing still takes place despite controls and security actions. The combination of detective story and bizarre comedy examines the concept of Schengen and its advantages and disadvantages for the countries involved.
Production is scheduled to begin on 1 May 2015. The development of the film received 19,000 EUR from the Slovak Audiovisual Fund.
