„The concept of the film was formed gradually and over the course of numerous meetings with survivors and witnesses of WWII. A survey was carried out in Slovakia and the Czech Republic, and many of the recorded witnesses are no longer alive today,“ says Robert Kirchhoff about his long time project, whose preproduction started in 2003.
The film presents authentic accounts of the violent uprooting of the Romani from their homes to the extermination camps of Dachau and Auschwitz during WWII, also creating a chronological reflection upon the situation of the Romani population in EU countries nowadays.
Hitchhiker Cinema is producing in coproduction with RTVS, the Czech television and atelier.doc. The Slovak Audiovisual Fund supported the project with 224,000 EUR together with the Ministry of Culture of the Slovak Republic and the International Visegrad Fund.
There will be two versions – one for cinema (90 minutes) and one for the television (52 minutes).
Robert Kirchhoff is also the author of Kauza Cervanová (2013) and Steam on the River (2015)
