Arthouse cinema Kinodvor re-opened

By Mateja Princic
Ljubljana's main arthouse cinema Kinodvor re-opened its doors on October 1, after being closed in April.

The director of the Slovenian Cinematheque, Stas Ravter, had closed the cinema because of its inability to secure funding. The only cinema devoted to contemporary art film, Kindovo has been placed under management of the Ljubljana City Council and a new team.

Negotiations with the Cinematheque for the return of screening equipment were unsuccessful, leading the Ljubljana City Council to form a new public entity and secure €230,000 for costs for the period of 2008-09, as well as €200,000 for new equipment.

Nina Pece, a former film festival director, has been named acting director and with Koen Van Daele, formerly of Cinematheque, as programming director.

Kindovor plans to screen quality European, independent, and world films. It will offer educational programmes related to the field of audiovisual culture and to developing special initiatives for young audiences. Kinodvor also wants to play a networking role in connecting organisations working in the field of film culture in Slovenia and abroad, and is a member of Europa Cinemas Network.
