as the jury opted to award most of the prizes to new Turkish films making their premier at the festival rather than the acknowledged favourites that have made their mark at international festivals throughout the year.
The Market - a Tale of Trade, a German Turkish co-production directed by Ben Hopkins won best film and best screenplay in the National competition while Best Director went to Dervis Zaim who also picked up a special jury prize for his Dot an unusual film that incorporates calligraphy into a story about a man haunted by guilt over his theft of a Koran.
The Siyad prize went to Reha Erdem's My Only Sunshine another world premier in Antalya which is already being tipped for a Berlin slot. Audiences will know his work from his previous film Times and Winds which garnered multiple international festival slots two years ago.
It's been a bumper year for Turkish films with international prizes for Nuri Bilge Ceylan's Three Monkeys that won Best Director's prize in Cannes this year and Yesim Ustaoglu's Pandora's Box that won Best Film in San Sebastian Film Festival as well as Best Actress for the film's star Ovul Avkıran. Avkiran also won the best actress prize in Antalya.
Other Turkish films that made their mark this year include Semih Kaplanoglu's Milk, Ozcan Apler's Autumn, Seyfi Teoman's Summer Book and Huseyin Karabey's My Marlon and Brando.
The Antalya Golden Orange Festival in which the best of Turkish film competes runs parallel with the international Eurasia Film Festival which screens international fare.
There is also the Eurasia Film Market which was held from 10-12 October and attracted over 1000 professionals from 55 countries. This marked the market's third successful year.
