Region 01-09-2024VENICE: Slovak documentary maker Peter Kerekes’ new film Wishing On A Star screens in the Orizzonti Competition of the Venice Film Festival this year. His previous film, the docudrama 107 Mothers screened in Venice Orizzonti in 2012 and Kerekes remarked that having a Slovak film in Venice was perhaps becoming a regular occurrence.
VENICE: Chilean director Pablo Larrain’s third film in his trilogy about famous women, Maria screens in competition at the 81 Venice Film Festival. The film stars Angelina Jolie as the famous opera diva Maria Callas in the final week of her life in Paris.
VENICE: Film critics notoriously do not like musicals but for this Todd Philips musical Joker: Folie A Deux, which screens in the main competition at Venice Film Festival, they just may have to make an exception.
FNE at Venice 2024: Out of Competition: Review: Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (USA / UK)
Region 29-08-2024VENICE: Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Tim Burton’s sequel to his much loved 1988 cult comedy classic Beetlejuice, was the opening film at the 89 Venice Film Festival, setting the scene for what was to be one of the most star studded Venice Festivals in recent history with Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, Monica Bellucci, Jenna Ortega and Willem Dafoe on the red carpet for opening night.
VENICE: Director Halina Reijn’s Baby Girl starring Nicole Kidman and Antonio Banderas screens in the main competition at this year’s Venice Film Festival with its red carpet star power making it one of the most highly anticipated films in the official selection.

VENICE: The Venezia 81 Jury, chaired by Isabelle Huppert, gave the Golden Lion for Best Film to The Room Next Door the first English language film by Pedro Almodóvar, while the Orizzonti Jury chaired by Debra Granik awarded the Romanian/Serbian coproduction The New Year That Never Came by Bogdan Mureșanu with the Award for Best Film.
VENICE: The parade of big stars on the Venice red carpet continued throughout the festival despite a furnace-like heat wave in the first days of the festival and a torrential rain storm that turned the red carpet gala into puddles on Thursday night.
