The film is a Bulgarian/Romanian coproduction of Vitkova and her company Viktoria Films and Anca Puiu of Mandragora. The film is the story of a Bulgarian woman who gives birth to a daughter despite her vow not to have a child in a communist country. The film is handled internationally by Viktoria World Sales and Distribution.
SOFIA: Maya Vitkova's family drama set in communist Bulgaria, Viktoria, has been picked up for North American release by Brooklyn-based distributor Big World Pictures. The film was already the first Bulgarian film ever selected in competition at Sundance and now it will continue its run on the festival circuit before hitting US theatres in 2016.
