“Runner will be released in the same year the story of Blade Runner took place - 2019, in a world where a lot from the dystopian story of Ridley Scott has unfortunately already become true,” Štěpán Altrichter told FNE.
During the 2017 Berlinale, Altrichter shot a music clip in Berlin, which will serve as a teaser, featuring German actor Franz Rogowski (Victoria).
The story of Runner takes place in fictive Berlin of 2019, after the victory of an extremist party. The dystopian tale full of paranoia, fear and violence taking place in an uprooted society controlled by modern technology, tells the story of an immigrant, who becomes a suspect in a case of murder just because of his non-conform behaviour and is consequently chased into schizophrenia. The whole film, which, according to the director, will remind more of a psychedelic trip to the darkest corners of human soul, will be shot exclusively at night.
The film is set to be a German/Czech coproduction produced by Altrichter himself, who is in the process of finding both Czech and German partners.
Czech State Cinematography Fund and Kuratorium junger deutscher film are supporting the development of the project.
Štěpán Altrichter´s feature debut Schmitke was a German/Czech coproduction between Credofilm, Filmuniversität Babelsberg Konrad Wolf, Tomas Vach, Produkce Radim Procházka and MAMOKO Entertainment. The film had eight nominations for the Czech Lions and received two awards. The DoP of Schmitke, Romanian Cristian Pirjol, awarded by the Association of Czech Cinematographers, will also be the DoP of Runner.
