TBILISI: Zaza Khalvashi's Namme has been selected as Georgia’s entry for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ award in the best foreign language film category. This Georgian/Lithuanian coproduction had its international premiere at the Tokyo Film Festival in 2017.

The film is a poetic look at a world caught between tradition and modernity, as it follows a family that has inherited the mission of taking care of a local healing water. Three sons are skeptical and only the young daughter Namme stays as the guardian of the family traditions.

The film was produced by Georgia’a Batumi Art-House Film Studio in coproduction with Lithuania’s Tremora. The film was supported by the Georgian National Film Center and the Lithuanian Film Centre. Paris-based Alpha Violet is handling the sales.

The Foreign Language Film category shortlist will be announced on 22 January 2019 and the 91st Academy Awards will be held on 24 February 2019.
