Production work started when Kozera was analysing the history of the biggest post-war prison rebellions, which took place in Czarne, Nowogard and Goleniów, which resulted from the cultural and social transformation of East Europeans countries. Objectivity in the evaluation was essential for the director, who interviewed prisoners as well as guards, policemen and politicians.
“Archival footage is the crucial aspect of that story,” producer Łukasz Bluszcz from Vision House said. “We found it in local public television archives, where, back then, that footage had been broadcast in fragments only. The documentary is cinematographically excellent and has a dramatic strength.”
Rebellion was developed during Archidoc Workshops in Paris and Dragon Forum (www.dragonforum.pl) at the Krakow Film Festival (www.krakowfilmfestival.pl).
Rebellion was shot during seven days on several locations in Poland including Czarne, Nowogard, Goleniów and Warsaw. Archival footage accounts for 18 minutes of the 52-minute film. The film is a coproduction of Vision House (www.visionhouse.eu), TVP SA (www.tvp.pl) and Al Jazeera Documentary Channel (www.aljazeera.com). The Polish Film Institute (www.pisf.pl) supported the project with 90,000 PLN (22,000 EUR). The total budget is 350,000 PLN (85,000 EUR).
The Rebellion festival and theatrical premiere is scheduled for the first half of 2013.
