The Sound of Nature…, currently in pre-production stage, conceived as a visual piece of cinematic art, focuses on the figure of musician Jeph Jerman living in Arizona, an experimentalist who has a passion for sounds and who discovers world through them. He has immersed himself in listening to sounds which are usually ignored and is engaged in a dialogue with sounds of nature by “playing” object as if they were musical instruments.
“He is not a composer in the traditional sense of this word. He is more of a micro-sound hunter, who tries to track down the murmur of a stream or the rustle of cactus thorns,” said the project manager, Anna Bławut Mazurkiewicz. “This film is about the passion which may help in discovering something extraordinary in the ordinary.”
“The journey with Jerman is just one of the levels of this film,” Bławut added. “He is our guide in the world of sounds, but these are not only the sounds of the American wilderness. We would like to move deeper into the world which is hard to see and often forgotten. The tool which will help us in this journey is the microscope. We would like to enter the structure of the wings of a moth fluttering in a lamp, a bird's feather or crystals, which are all Jerman's tools and instruments.” The director and his cinematographer plan to use microscope-like shoots along with SGI animation. Sound designer Radosław Ochnio plans to record sounds in binaural recording, a method of recording sound that uses two microphones arranged with the intent to create a 3-D stereo sound sensation of being in the room with the performers or instruments.
Film Studio Rabarbar based in Łódź, Poland, is producing the 60-minute documentary. The film received financial support from the Polish Film Institute. The budget is 360,000 PLN (88,000 EUR). The producers are still seeking a sales agent and coproducer to complete 37,000 EUR in funding.
