The project, which won the first edition of the Krakow International Film Fund, was placed in Poland through the efforts of Film Commission Poland.
The film is a French/Belgian/Polish coproduction produced by Denis Carot from Elzévir Films (France). The coproducers are Edyta Janczak-Hiriart and Karolina Mróz-Couchard from Lava Films (Poland), and Gaetan David and André Logie from Panache Productions et La Compagnie Cinématographique (Belgium).
The film is set in a funeral home on the verge of bankruptcy, in a small, deserted town in the middle of a cold winter. The only two employees left are entrusted to bring a corpse to its final resting place, but get lost along the way.
The script based on the book Edmond Ganglion & Fils by Joël Egloff was co-written by the director and the author of the novel. The cast includes Jean-Pierre Bacri, Olivier Gourmet and Arthur Dupond.
Anna E. Dziedzic from Film Commission Poland said, “Locations in Malopolska caught the producers' attention immediately, and the newly created International Film Fund, where they turned with a funding request, definitely kept them interested in the region.”
In August 2015, Grand Froid won the first edition of the competition organized as part of the Krakow International Film Fund. The fund is a new, first-in-Poland instrument aimed at attracting foreign productions. The fund was established to give Krakow a competitive edge over CEE film centres such as Prague, Berlin, Budapest and Zagreb.
“IFF is a reaction to the current trends and needs in the industry. An important advantage of creating the International Film Fund is generating new jobs in the region; promoting local talents, actors and subcontractors; and improving Krakow's image,” said Katarzyna Wodecka-Stubbs, General Manager of Krakow Film Commission. She added, “The launch of IFF raised huge interest on the European film market.”
