FNE at Warsaw Kids Film Forum 2019: An Expanded WKFF Hands out Four Awards

By

WARSAW: The pre-teen German animated series Nearth – A New World won the Best Pitch award at the 2019 edition of Warsaw Kids Film Forum, at the close of the event on 27 September 2019. The Danish 2D animated film Napoleon won a three-week Pop Up Film Residency in Bratislava, and two Polish productions received new in-kind post-production awards.

Too Old for Fairytales produced by Pokromski Studio received the award of 80,000 PLN in post-production services from the Wroclaw based Audiovisual Technology Center. Wojtek the Smiling Soldier, planned as an Italian/Polish coproduction from Amarcord, received a prize of 60,000 PLN in post-production services.

The Polish Film Institute's decision to designate a special funding category for children’s film production four years ago is showing results at this year’s WKFF, with eight Polish productions or coproductions pitched across two days and a ninth film given a special work-in-progress presentation. Speaking with FNE, Maciej Jakubczyk, head of WKFF, said “There are good results for Polish projects,” noting that they had filled their one-to-one meeting timeslots with industry decision makers.

The forum also saw a leap forward in both the quantity and quality of attendees this year. “We’re very happy about some really meaningful people that decided to come, “Jakubczyk told FNE. Among them were UK and Canadian investment funds and representatives of major CEI European broadcasters and buyers. A common remark from attendees was the ease in arranging meetings at the WKFF. Jakubczyk referenced that, saying, “Decision makers who aren’t easily accessible at bigger forums are accessible here. This is a positive for the one-to-one meetings.” New this year, he added, was a greater receptivity to projects for the youngest viewers. “Pre-school projects found interest this year. It’s not easy to find financing for that,” Jakubczyk said.

The forum, which is the industry branch of the Kids Kino International Festival, will change its name to Kids Kino Industry for the 2020 event scheduled for 30 September – 2 October 2020.

The Warsaw Kids Film Forum was sponsored by FNE and CEI (Central European Initiative). For the full list of all sponsors go to Warsaw Kids Film Forum.
