Statistics say that during his professional career every train driver unintentionally kills fifteen to twenty people. Ilija is a 60-year-old train driver, close to retiring. He holds the infamous record of twenty-eight kills committed during his career. Ilija’s 19-year-old adopted son, Sima, follows in his father’s footsteps. He’s terrified, unwilling to become a killer. But, days go by and there are no accidents, and Ilija, anxious his son is not going to become a proper driver, takes the matter into his own hands.
The main characters are played by Lazar Ristovski, Petar Korać, Mirjana Karanović, Jasna Đurčić and Nina Janković.
The film was produced by Lazar Ristovski and Petar Ristovski through Serbia’s Zillion Film in coproduction with Ivan Maloča through Croatia’s Inter Film.
Train Driver’s Diary / Dnevnik mašinovođe was supported by Film Center Serbia, the Croatian Audiovisual Centre, the government of the Province of Vojvodina and Eurimages.
Shooting started in February 2015 and lasted through June 2015. All five shooting weeks were spent on location in Belgrade, more precisely at the Blue Train Hangar, the Dunav Station, the Makiš marshalling yard, the locomotive turntable at the Belgrade Fair and the Rakovica-Ralja railroad.
The film had its world premiere at the Moscow International Film Festival on 28 June 2016 and was shown to the Serbian audience for the first time at the Cinema City Film Festival in Novi Sad on 2 July 2016, before being theatrically released by Artvista on 14 September 2016. The film was also presented at the 2016 Cannes Film Market.
Son of famous Serbian children’s writer, aphorist, poet and journalist Duško Radović, Miloš Radović studied Film and TV directing at the Faculty of Dramatic Arts in Belgrade and at the Communications Training Institute in Tokyo. Radović has received around sixty awards for his work, including the third prize for his short film Iznenadna i prerana smrt Pukovnika K.K. at the 1987 Cannes Film Festival. He wrote and directed two feature films before Train Driver’s Diary, as well as four TV series and five theatre plays, out of which one was staged off Broadway.
