Watchtower is the second feature film from Pelin Esmer, previously known for her documentaries. Her first feature film, 10 to 11, won the special prize at the 2010 Golden Boll.
The movie is about two alienated people, each seeking refuge from their private demons through self-imposed isolation. A fire warden and a coach hostess are drawn to each other in a mountain-side watchtower. The lead roles are played by Olgun Simsek and Nilay Erdonmez. The cast also includes veteran actors Menderes Samancılar and Riza Akin. The film completed shooting in the Black Sea town of Kastamonu in autumn 2011.
Watchtower was supported by Turkish Culture Ministy (www.sinema.gov.tr), Eurimages, CNC, Medienboard and Ford, and was produced by Pelin Esmer’s own company Sinefilm (www.sinefilm.com).
