TALLINN: The Estonian Film Institute announced five grants for minority coproductions totalling 227,000 EUR. The list includes two feature films and three documentaries.
TALLINN: Aet Laigu is this year’s Estonian representative in the European Film Promotion’s (EFP) Producers on the Move programme. Laigu works as a producer and screenwriter at her own production company Meteoriit and is just back from the Tribeca Film Festival where her film Mother / Ema screened in the main competition.
TALLINN: The local head of the international telecoms giant Telia has hinted that the company may start to produce its own content in the vein of Netflix and Amazon. Telia is also the largest mobile operator in Estonia. The move would be a first for an Estonian telecom company.
The Estonian Film Insitute announced the latest two grants from its recently established microgrants scheme. The grants are awarded to Scandinavian Silence / Skandinaavia Vaikus by Martti Helde and Portugal by first-timer Lauri Lagle. Both grants are EUR 120,000 each and are funded in equal shares by the Estonian Film Institute and the Cultural Endowment of Estonia.
TALLINN: The Estonian Film Institute announced production grants for films to be made on the occasion of the Republic of Estonia’s 100th anniversary in 2018. The list includes mostly debut feature films, highlighting the shift of generations in the country’s film industry.
TALLINN: Class Reunion / Klassikokkutulek, a remake slapstick comedy by Rene Vilbre, broke the all-time box office record in Estonia with 980,000 EUR gross in the first six weeks since its theatrical release on 19 February 2016. The previous box office record was held by James Cameron’s Avatar.
TALLINN: The Estonian Film Institute announced that the first grant from the country’s new cash rebate fund FilmEstonia will go to the historical drama The Eternal Road by the Finnish director AJ Annila. The total budget of FilmEstonia in 2016 is 0.5 m EUR.
TALLINN: Estonian production Class Reunion, a remake slapstick comedy by Rene Vilbre, has broken the all-time opening weekend box office record for a domestic film in Estonia with over 33,000 admissions and more than 191,000 EUR gross.
TALLINN: Apollo Kino cinema chain opened its third multiplex in Estonia and the second in the capital city of Tallinn. The new multiplex has six screens with 800 seats and is located in a new supermarket opened in the densely populated suburb of Mustamäe.
TALLINN: Estonia recorded its best box office in decades in 2015 with 18% gross growth and almost 20% admissions growth compared to 2014.
