The film, which should be completed in 2018, is produced by Riga-based Film Studio DEVINI, where Kolmane is the creative director. It is coproduced by Magiclab, Masterfilm and Studija 2 and Poland’s TouchFilms. The production budget is 900,000 EUR and the film received support from the National Film Center of Latvia and State Culture Capital Foundation of Latvia.
The autobiographical drama is set on the eve of World War II, where the six-year-old girl Bille lives in a world where the rich and poor walk separate streets. Bille has learned to put up with poverty but not with the constant lack of her mother’s love. Relatives take care of the girl but keep pointing out how oafish she is and that nothing good can come out of her. It hurts Bille deeply and her dream is to prove herself worthy and free herself from feelings of inferiority. Confronted by the weird and ruthless adult world, Bille tries to find an escape in her vivid imagination.
