Ida Wins Oscar and Indie Spirit Award

    Pawel Pawlikowski’s black and white drama Ida was awarded with an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film and also with the Independent Spirit Award for Best International Film last weekend.

    Ida, which was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Cinematography (Łukasz Żal, Ryszard Lenczewski), was produced by Phoenix Film (DK) and Opus Film (PL) in association with Portobello Pictures (GB) and it was supported by the Polish Film Institute.

    It was a good year for CEE films at the Oscars. Two Polish short documentaries, Joanna by Aneta Kopacz (produced by Wajda Studio in coproduction with the National Audiovisual Institute and co-financed by the Polish Film Institute) and Our Curse by Tomasz Śliwiński (Warsaw Film School), were nominated in the Best Short Subject category. Polish costume designer Anna Biedrzycka-Sheppard (Maleficent) was nominated for Best Costumes.

    Estonian/Georgian coproduction Tangerines by Zaza Urusadze was also nominated in the Best Foreign Language Film category. The film was produced by Allfilm and Cinema 24 in Georgia.

    The Independent Spirit Awards were announced on 21 February and the Oscar official gala took place in Los Angeles on 22 February 2014
